Together for the Gospel Conference – Overview

Together for the Gospel 2008 (T4G-08 ) was an incredible conference. About 5000 people attended, mostly men, mostly under 40 years of age (I would estimate about 75-80%), with the greatest number being under 30. Many were pastors, many were seminary students, and others were just excited about the Lord and the gospel. Here’s a picture taken from near the hall entrance that gives an idea of what it looked like:

The preaching line up was Ligon Duncan, Thabiti Anyabwile, John MacArthur, Mark Dever, R.C. Sproul, Al Mohler, John Piper & C.J. Mahaney. All were excellent, all in different ways. More to come in future posts about some of their messages.

Here are some of the things I really liked about the conference (in no particular order):

1. The name: Together for the Gospel – I find great encouragement in it as I do want to be together with other like-minded people for the gospel

2. The camaraderie (thank you wordpress for spelling help on that one) amongst the leaders. They sat around on chairs after most of the messages and talked about the sermons and the issues that were raised, like friends discussing things together.

3. The focus on the Word of God. It is so nice to not have to wonder if the preacher will be trying to rightly divide the word of truth.

4. The bookstore. The conference leaders screen the publishers and the books themselves so that no junk is allowed. I spent a lot of time there (some money too!).

5. The free books. They kept giving away books to everyone , something like 13-14 in total. Visit Darryl Dash’s site here for a full list.

6. The friendships. I met a number of people, both from Canada and the US and started some good new friendships.

7. The Canadian Connection: Tim Challies and Paul Martin organized a meeting for the Canadians at T4G08. A good number showed up – I would guess 50-60. I knew a few and met several others. It was nice to meet Tim Challies and Darryl Dash, whose blogs are in my RSS feed. (I also had the privilege of meeting Paul Martin earlier in the conference on the main floor) Also I met some pastors from Alberta, including Brent Reilly who pastors First Baptist Olds, about 40 min west of Three Hills. We plan to connect in the future, Lord willing!

Well that’s an opening summary. I plan to post more thoughts on individual sessions and more pics as well.

  1. It was great to meet you as well, Tim!

  2. Hey Tim – it was great getting to know you last week at the conference. Rooming with someone you don’t know beforehand is always a bit scary, but you didn’t snore all that much! 🙂 Maybe we should just book a room now for 2010!

I just posted my T4G reflections up on my blog, when you get a minute.
